This colt was incredible value. Almanzor has been hot property last year with his first crop yearlings and again this year with his second crop yearlings. Very typical of his very good looking sire who shuttles to Cambridge Stud in New Zealand. I was incredibly taken by Almanzor the first time I saw him in New Zealand. I just simply couldn’t get close to buying one last year as they were far too expensive. Last year they sold up to $800k and averaged $189k. This year they are already averaging $189k and have sold up to $440k. This was a golden opportunity to secure a correct and sound son of Almanzor, made very much in the image of his gorgeous father. Almanzor was a top class miler and champion European 3yo winning 3 times at Group 1 level. In 2016 Almanzor had a TimeForm of 133 (equal rated with WINX). This colt had clean X-Rays and good scope and would qualify for export to Hong Kong should his ownership group later opt to view him as a potential ‘trade’ horse.
Sale Notes by Grant Morgan Almanzor has started his Southern Hemisphere stallion career in outstanding fashion. Viewed by most as a stallion destined to produce 3yo guineas and Derby/Oaks types, Almanzor supplied the winner of New Zealand’s richest race in the 2022 Karaka 2yo Million at Ellerslie in January with Dynastic. Training right on from that victory, Dynastic has since been a narrow runner up in the Gr 1 Sistema Stakes at Ellerslie. Almanzor has also supplied the two time Group placed Andalus in New Zealand from his first crop. With only 9 starters in Australasia thus far, there are a large number of Almanzor’s waiting in the wings. Almanzor has been incredibly popular in each of his four seasons at stud in New Zealand with 142,145, 160, and most recently 140 mares. I’m also a huge fan of Almanzor’s sire Wootton Bassett. He was acquired last year by Coolmore and now shuttles to Australia (2021 fee $71k). Already a top proven sire in Europe, expect Wootton Bassett to become a leading sire in Australasia too.
Sale Notes by Grant Morgan The mating between Almanzor and Ready At Eight gives this mare by far her best chance at success at stud. This is the first and only time Ready At Eight has visited Almanzor. Fair to say Ready at Eight hasn’t set the world on fire at stud as yet. But I believe lighting only has to strike once with some of these mares. I’m hoping Almanzor ‘upgrades’ and ‘dominates’ Ready At Eight. Certainly in terms of type this colt looks like an Almanzor. Yearlings have to look like athletes. Pedigree and performance of siblings will only take them so far and can be largely window dressing. I’m banking on this colt being the mares best. He’s certainly worth the gamble at this bargain price.
